News - Popcom NCR Taps POPDEVED Modules for Teachers’ Training

Once again, the Commission on Population and PCPD was a tag team during a teachers’ training on integrated adolescent and youth development and population and development education.

The POPDEVED Modules for Catholic Schools was used as the main reference material in the training. Selected videos from the Kwentong Kartero series on popdev, human sexuality, and responsible parenthood and materials on adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights from other sources were also used.

“We want teachers to have a deeper understanding of these concepts so they can be more confident in teaching them to their students,” Popcom National Capital Region director Bhoyet Tacardon said.

This effort becomes urgent now that the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law is already being enforced. One of the sections in its implementing rules and regulations directs the Department of Education to “undertake a comprehensive national and regional training program for public and private schools to enable educators to develop appropriate knowledge and skills on responsible parenthood and reproductive health education and life coaching.”

The training is Popcom’s initiative to comply with this particular requirement of the law. It is also a response to advance Popcom’s own adolescent health and youth development program.

Held in Baguio city and organized by Popcom’s National Capital Region office, the training was attended by Popcom NCR trainers and 30 public school teachers from the cities of Navotas and Mandaluyong teaching Araling Panlipunan,Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health, and Values Education. These subjects are currently the ones where topics on popdev, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and responsible parenthood are integrated.

“After this training, a technical working group will be formed among the participants to develop template lesson plans that will integrate relevant POPDEVED modules to the K-12 curriculum. Once this is done, Popcom can start organizing the roll-out training for NCR teachers,” Tacardon said.
